The Indianapolis Closure Act: When Manning Finally Got Us
Official Record - January 21, 2007
Before Eli became the face of Dynasty District heartbreak, his brother Peyton got us first. The Patriots led 21-6 at halftime. Then led 34-31 with 3:49 remaining. Then lost.
Town Council Emergency Meeting, January 22, 2007:
"So this is what it feels like to blow a lead. Noted. Don't care for it. Motion to never do this again. Motion fails because we can't control football games. Motion to panic about the Manning family in general. Motion carries unanimously."
The Game That Got Away
The RCA Dome in Indianapolis became the first location on Dynasty District's "Places We Lost Championships We Should Have Won" list. It would not be the last.
The Timeline of Tragedy:
- Halftime: Patriots 21, Colts 6 (everything's fine!)
- 3:49 remaining: Patriots 34, Colts 31 (we got this!)
- 2:17 remaining: Joseph Addai touchdown, Colts 38-34 (wait what?)
- Final: Patriots 34, Colts 38 (how did this happen?)
Dynasty District Reaction: Mass confusion followed by mass sadness
The Manning Family Problem Begins
Municipal Concern Report, January 2007:
"We've identified a pattern. The Manning family appears to be our kryptonite. Peyton just ended our season. Eli is in the playoffs. This could become a generational issue. Recommend monitoring all Manning family members for future football potential. Also, recommend therapy."
Prophetic Note: Little did we know that Eli would win the Super Bowl two weeks later. Against the 18-0 Patriots. In 2008. The Manning nightmare was just beginning.
Citizen Testimonials
Harold Weatherby, Town Council:
"We had them. WE HAD THEM. Up 21-6. Up 34-31. How? HOW? I need answers. And alcohol. Mostly alcohol."
Dr. Patricia Walsh, Hospital:
"Treated 34 cases of 'Blown Lead Syndrome.' New medical condition. Symptoms include disbelief, anger, and repeatedly checking the score hoping it changed. It didn't."
Police Chief Morrison:
"Quieter than celebrations, louder than expected. Lots of angry phone calls to nobody in particular. No citations issued, but maybe should have been for noise complaints to the universe."
Drake Maye (Age 4):
"Why is daddy yelling at the TV?"
Town Council:
"Kid, someday you'll understand playoff football. And pain. Mostly pain. But you'll fix this. The prophecy says so. Probably."
Municipal Impact
The Indianapolis loss introduced Dynasty District to a new kind of heartbreak: the blown lead.
Emergency Ordinance 2007-01: The Blown Lead Prevention Act
"Whereas the Patriots blew a lead in the AFC Championship, and whereas that was extremely unpleasant, be it resolved that:
SECTION 1: All Dynasty District residents are prohibited from celebrating until games are actually over.
SECTION 2: Blown leads are officially recognized as traumatic events worthy of municipal support.
SECTION 3: The phrase 'we've got this' is temporarily banned (too dangerous).
SECTION 4: Peyton Manning is granted 'Worthy Adversary' status (unlike his brother Eli, who would later receive 'Persona Non Grata' status).
SECTION 5: Indianapolis added to list of 'Cities We Don't Want To Visit.'"
The Peyton vs. Eli Distinction
Official Dynasty District Manning Registry:
Peyton Manning:
- Beat us once in a great game
- Status: Respected opponent
- Town feelings: Disappointed but not traumatized
- Allowed to be mentioned at municipal functions
Eli Manning:
- Beat us twice in Super Bowls
- Status: PERSONA NON GRATA
- Town feelings: Deep trauma
- Not allowed to be mentioned at all
The Distinction Matters
By The Numbers
The Collapse:
- Halftime lead: 15 points
- Lead with 3:49 remaining: 3 points
- Final deficit: 4 points
- Dynasty District's comfort level: Shattered
- Trust in halftime leads: Eliminated
The Aftermath:
- Emergency counseling sessions: 67
- "How though?" asked: 492 times
- Satisfactory answers received: 0
- Colts fans celebrating: Too many
- Dynasty District's happiness: Postponed
The Tom Brady Interception
With a chance to win late, Brady threw an interception. Dynasty District residents couldn't process it.
Town Historian Note:
"Tom Brady doesn't make mistakes. Except when he does. This was one of those times. We don't like to acknowledge it, but historical accuracy demands we mention the interception. We've done so. We're moving on. We don't want to talk about it."
Legacy
The 2006 AFC Championship loss taught Dynasty District an important lesson: nothing is safe. Not big leads. Not home field advantage (wait, we were in Indianapolis). Not anything.
It was preparation for 2007's perfect season imperfection. For Eli Manning's first strike. For a decade of playoff challenges.
What We Learned:
- Never celebrate early
- The Manning family is dangerous
- Blown leads are traumatic
- Indianapolis is cursed (for us)
- Drake Maye needs to hurry up (he was 4)
The Road to Recovery
Unlike the Super Bowl losses, this one didn't require town closure or massive counseling programs. We were disappointed, not devastated.
It would prepare us for worse disappointments to come.
Closing Thoughts
The Indianapolis loss hurt. But it was "regular" playoff hurt. Not "Eli Manning twice" hurt. Not "18-1" hurt. Just regular, honest, straightforward playoff disappointment.
We could handle it.
We had no idea what was coming.
The Manning family wasn't done with us.
